Match History

The Bullants and Southport have not met since we became a standalone VFL team due to restrictions and lockdowns last year.

The Ant Hill

The Ants had a bye last week, coming off their previous weeks trip to play Brisbane VFL away. It was in this game the Ants suffered one of their bigger losses of the season as they were outclassed by the tough Brisbane mids and couldn’t adapt to the different conditions. Despite this, Boyd continued his goalkicking form and the boys didn’t hang their heads.

The opposition

Southport are sitting second on the ladder behind the undefeated Casey, with an 8-2 record of their own. They had a solid 44-point win over the Sandringham Zebras last week notching up another score above 100 points and they will be hoping to replicate that form this week at Genis Steel Oval.

Matchups to watch

Will Mitchell v Jacob Dawson

Mitchell was our best on ground against Brisbane VFL the other week, adding to his already strong season averaging 28 touches across his five consecutive games since round 7. On the other hand, Southport’s Jacob Dawson is averaging 30 touches and is far and away leading the Smithy’s VFL Coaches Player of the Year award. These two should share a lot of the footy and the matchup should be a delight to watch for spectators.

Liam Podhajski v Fraser Thurlow

The Ants ruckman is averaging 17 hitouts a game but will be without the support from his backup Andrew Courtney this week. For the Sharks, Thurlow is averaging more than 30 hitouts a game (9th in the whole VFL for total hitouts) and will have his support in the ruck with Brayden Crossley. Whoever can get the most effective taps out between these two will really dictate the flow of the game out of the middle.

What’s on the line

Most importantly this game will be the first opportunity to present the Alexander Aurrichio medal to the best on ground, celebrating the great life of the man who played for us and the Sharks over his career. We look forward to seeing all of you on Sunday for what should be a hard-fought game.
