Match History

The Bullants and Brisbane Lion Reserves have not met in the past due to restrictions and lockdowns last year, alongside the structural changes to the VFL and NEAFL.

The Ant Hill

Last week the Ants suffered a late 9-point loss against the Carlton VFL side, but it was another strong indicator of effort and the direction of where the boys are going. They couldn’t contain the likes of Crocker and Setterfield, whilst our own Jack Boyd and Nathan Honey kicked 6 between them.

The opposition

The Brisbane Lion Reserves are sitting at 5-3 and eighth overall on the ladder, despite a 6-goal loss to Southport last week. The Lions have the second-best percentage in the entire competition of 135.4 and will hope they can keep up their high scoring form at home against the Bullants.

Matchups to watch

Tom Wilson v Rhys Mathieson

The courageous Bullants skipper Tom Wilson is producing another consistent season so far, averaging 30 touches a game alongside 7 marks. On the other hand, the AFL-listed Rhys ‘Beast Mode’ Mathieson has also played every game for his VFL club, averaging 32.3. touches and piling on 7 goals in the process. Whoever can sneak forward and setup more opportunities for their team or themselves will definitely have a big impact on this game.

Jean-Luc Velissaris v Ryan Lester

Velissaris once again found his way onto the scoreboard last week, making it six goals from his last three outings at half-forward, despite some inaccuracy. For the Lions, Lester has been a pillar in defence, averaging 6 marks and 18 disposals in his appearances in the twos. This game will be a huge test for Velissaris and if he can kick straight, it will put a lot of pressure on his opponent and the Lions team.

What’s on the line

With another narrow loss the Ants are desperate to get a win to validate their efforts over the last month, whereas the Lions will be looking to mount a charge towards top 4 at this stage of the season. Under the Friday night lights we can certainly expect weather to be a factor, but it shouldn’t stop our boys from giving 100% and taking it up to the Lions.
