Round 8 Match Preview: Bullants v Port Melbourne

Details: Genis Steel Oval, Sunday 15th of May, 1:05pm (AEST)

Match History

The Northern Bullants have not played Port Melbourne since becoming a standalone VFL club in 2020, with their last few meetings being cancelled due to COVID restrictions.

Port Melbourne will be the first standalone VFL club that the Ants have played this year and they should look forward to what looks like a very even matchup.

The Ant Hill

Last week the Ants matched a strong Sandringham Zebras outfit away for scoring shots but didn’t take their chances and went down by 5 goals. After their impressive win in Sydney a few weeks ago the Ants are trying to string some strong performances together and will need some of the new inclusions to get involved if they want to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

The opposition

Sitting two spots ahead of the Ants on the ladder, Port Melbourne will be fired up after letting one slip in a 37-point loss against a fast-finishing Richmond VFL side last week. They have been very competitive in all of their games this season and this game doesn’t look like it should be any different.

Matchups to watch

Jack Boyd & Ethan Phillips

Boyd has kicked 3 goals each in his last three outings for the Ants and will hope to continue this form going into Sunday. At the other end of the field Port Melbourne’s Ethan Phillips is coming off a 16 mark and 26 disposal game and will be looking to limit Boyd’s influence on the scoreboard this week.

Tom Wilson & Eli Templeton

The Bullants veteran skipper is having another strong season with consistent performances in the guts, averaging 29.2 disposals so far this year. For Port Melbourne, Eli Templeton has been an X-factor and is averaging 28 disposals in the midfield position as well. Whoever can get first use here you would think would really set their team up for the win on the weekend.

What’s on the line

Both teams are coming into this Round 8 clash with just the 1 win each for the season under their belt and will see this as a big opportunity for a second. The winner of this game will jump a few positions on the ladder guaranteed as well as bragging rights in this standalone showdown.
